Stig Petri

Principal Machine Learning Engineer

I hope that people in the scientific communities will become better at working together to bring the benefits of new science and technology to all of humanity, and those in charge will push for responsible use thereof.

What is your primary work area within Eriksholm Research Centre?

I am part of the AI research team, where we explore how AI can be harnessed and utilized to help people with hearing impairments benefit from our scientific discoveries at a faster pace.

What originally triggered you interest in the hearing care field?

Physics, especially relating to audio, has always been a great interest of mine. Also, listening to a wide variety of music and musical genres is something I greatly appreciate and value, and I hope to be able to do so for many years to come. As such I also very much wish to help people with hearing impairments enjoy music, as well as to be able to participate in conversations (about music or anything else).

What brought you to Eriksholm?

A good, previous colleague of mine, who is now working at Eriksholm, talked very highly of the work being done here so, when a job advertisement popped up that sounded amazing, I quickly sent in my application, and I was lucky enough to get the job.

What motivates you in your job?

During daily work it is the technical challenges and working towards a greater understanding of the physics and perception involved in speech and other audio. On a higher level, it is contributing to improving the daily life of people with hearing impairments, perhaps myself one day.

What do you hope to achieve in the long run?

I hope to one day be able to look back and see that my work and my presence have made a positive difference for people using hearing aids, for the technological development of the company, and for the daily life of my colleagues.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not working at Eriksholm?

When I am not at work, I spend time with my wife and dog (hopefully soon “dogs”), listen to music (a lot!), read, and sometimes you will find me implementing a few “out there” experiments, tests, or features there wasn’t time for during working hours.

What is the most exciting scientific breakthrough or invention in your time?

The large language models (ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek etc.) are bringing a lot of exciting possibilities with them, but at the same time potential for harmful use. They make an incredibly powerful technology for e.g., seeking knowledge and learning in a personalized way, but they must be used responsibly and their output evaluated with a critical eye.
